Hardness and Adhesion:
Wolff-Wilborn Pencil Hardness Tester. Sward Hardness Rocker/Coating Hardness Cross Hatch Cutter/Adhesion

To determine the hardness of coatings, there are several test methods available. The simplest and commonly used test method is the pencil hardness test. The Wolff-Wilborn Pencil Tester which complies with ASTM D3363, ECCA-TA-1 is a device where a pencil with a specific hardness is fixed into a carrier at a specific angle and pressure.

Hardness test can also be carried out with the Hardness Rocker known as the Sward Type test. This test method complies with ASTM D2134

Paint adhesion is equally important. The test method generally used can be carried out with the Cross Hatch Cutter. With this test, the device cuts a specified number if lines into the coating and forming a lattice like pattern. Then a special tape is placed over the cuts and then lifted off the surface. The remaining sections of paint that remain on the surface determine the adhesion properties of the coating. This test conforms to BS 3900:E6, ASTM D 3359, BS/DIN EN ISO 2409
